The coach tour: four hours, palace included

What that timetable means in practice: you will see the ten rooms, the Marble Hall and the terraces, and you will not see the New Palace or the Chinese House. Twenty minutes in the park is enough for the grave and the view down the vineyard terraces, and not for a walk. If that sounds thin, remember that the palace interior takes about 40 minutes at a comfortable pace anyway; the tour is not shortchanging you on the rooms, it is shortchanging you on the park, and the park is free to come back to. The walking tour: six hours, park and city

This one meets at Generator Berlin Alexanderplatz, Otto-Braun-Straße 65, and the group travels to Potsdam by train with the guide; the listing does not say whether the transport ticket is included, so check that line before you book. Six hours door to door with an English-speaking guide. The walk takes in the Glienicke Bridge, where agents were exchanged across the Cold War border in 1962, 1985 and 1986; the Cecilienhof, where the Potsdam Conference sat in July and August 1945, seen from the gardens; the Marble Palace from outside; the Dutch Quarter with its 134 red-brick houses; and Sanssouci Park with the palace exterior and the terraces. Coach or walk

Doing it yourself on the S7

Potsdam is about 25 km south-west of central Berlin. The S7 runs every 10 minutes and takes about 40 minutes to Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, stopping at Hauptbahnhof, Friedrichstraße, Zoologischer Garten and Wannsee on the way. The RE1 and other regional trains do it in about 25 minutes. Both need a Berlin ABC-zone ticket. From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, bus 695 or X15 goes to the stop Schloss Sanssouci in about 10 minutes, roughly every 20 minutes; bus 605, 606 and tram 91 go to Luisenplatz, 100 m from the park’s Green Gate. Walking from the station through the old town is about 2.5 km and 35 minutes. All of it is on how to get there.

Done this way, a palace morning from Berlin is: out of the door at 08:30, S7, bus 695, Ehrenhof for a 10:00 or 10:30 slot booked in advance, 40 minutes inside, an hour on the terraces and at the grave, lunch at the Historic Windmill or in Brandenburger Straße, and the afternoon for the Dutch Quarter or the New Palace. That is the Potsdam day trip I would build for someone who does not mind trains. The tour is the better choice when you do mind them, when you want a guide talking, or when you are here in July and would rather the operator held the slot.

The three-hour City and Castles bus starts at Potsdam Hauptbahnhof rather than in Berlin, so you take the S7 to it.
